James (AKA Jamie...AKA Shark Shorts) is one of the best young racers in the sport of OCR. At just 17, he is now in his 3rd year of racing and has the potential to become a star the sport. As one of the first young athletes to focus on OCR exclusively, James left his high school Track & Field and Cross Country teams, where he was a stand-out performer, to train and race in OCR specifically.
2018 North American Pro Team, Stratton, VT - 3rd Place
What was your first obstacle race and why did you do it? The Spartan Sprint in Sacramento California, in 2015. I participated in the race because I saw a commercial on TV and it really grabbed my interest - it had things I love doing like running on dirt and grass, and it mixed that up with obstacles. It also looked like a real challenge, which I love!
What drives you to compete? The competition itself is what drives me. I love pushing my body to its limits, and then past them. I love to challenge myself as often as possible, and OCR allows me to do just that.
If you could run an obstacle race anywhere in the world, where would it be? Austria. The venue looks absolutely beautiful, and I’ve heard that the course is brutal...and I love a brutal course!
What interesting fact do most fans of OCR not know about you? I am a big snowboarding enthusiast. I love to ride and I love to follow the whole snowboarding scene.
Who is one of the OCR athletes you admire most and why? My coach, Robert Killian. He is always pushing himself to be better, he never gives up, and he always takes time to talk with people.
If you hadn't found OCR, in what sport(s) would you be competing? Track & Field and Cross Country at the Varsity level.
