Tyler Veerman OCR Obstacle Course Racing Spartan race

I grew up in the small town of Pekin, Illinois. I don't think a day passed that I wasn't outdoors riding my bike, running, or hiking. I always loved being active and outdoors because it put me in a good mood. After competing in Track/XC in High School I was offered a scholarship to Trinity Christian College but had NO idea what I wanted to study. After one year at Trinity, I burnt out and eventually stopped running. I transferred through different schools and ended up graduating from Illinois State University where I majored in Recreation Management.

ISU had a circus there believe it or not! With some trampoline and parkour experience under my belt I decided to try out for some of the acts. Lucky for me I made the cut! I slowly started building more upper body strength through the exercises that were given to us. My friends also encouraged me to start training for American Ninja Warrior so I practiced lots of grip work. Soon enough I started running again and eventually signed up for my first obstacle course race (Tough Mudder). I had the time of my life. We were hiking through mud up to our shins, swimming through ice baths, hiking up steep hills, and getting electrocuted by live wires. The only thing missing was some competition!

After my Tough Mudder experience, I started researching other races and found Spartan Race. It was just what I was looking for. Spartan was my first competitive obstacle race and got me focused on training more seriously. Shortly after running my first Spartan race, I took 1st in a local OCR called Hard Charge. I knew at that moment that this was what I wanted to do. After I finished at ISU I moved out to Colorado to live and train in the mountains. So far it has been the BEST decision of my life. I'm currently pursuing a career in the outdoor industry and training to compete at a high level in OCR.

What was your first obstacle race and why did you do it?

Tough Mudder. It was the creative design of the obstacles that really drew my attention. I looked up pictures and videos of them and was blown away. I just had to try it.

What drives you to compete?

It might sound cocky but I know that I have potential to be great in this sport. I just have to work really hard to get there.

If you could run an obstacle race anywhere in the world, where would it be?

Somewhere in Patagonia like Torres del Paine National Park. That place looks sweet.

What interesting fact do most fans of OCR not know about you?

I was a member of the Gamma Phi Circus at ISU for 2 years. My acts were Wall Trampoline and Tumbling/Vaulting. And no we didn’t have any elephant.

Who is one of the OCR athletes you admire most and why?

Robert Killian. He’s just a nice guy who’s easy to get along with. And he’s a beast on the course.

If you hadn't found OCR, in what sport(s) would you be competing?

Either running up mountains or doing American Ninja Warrior.

What are your goals with OCR?

At some point, making top 10 at the Spartan World Championship. Next season I hope to make top 5 in the Spartan Mountain Series.
